At Kelston Girls' College, we place the holistic well-being (Hauora) of every student at the core of our educational mission. A student who is strong and supported in all aspects of their life is best placed to thrive academically and personally.
Our approach to well-being is guided by the Te Whare Tapa Whā Māori model of health, developed by expert Mason Durie. This model sees Hauora as a whare (house) with four walls and a foundation, all of which contribute to overall collective and individual well-being.
Our Whare Tapa Whā: The Five Pillars of Support
We structure our pastoral and well-being programmes, including Ngā Toa o Kerehana, to support all five interconnected areas:
Mental & Emotional
Fostering resilience, managing stress, and developing emotional literacy.
Social Well-being
Building strong relationships (Whanaungatanga) between students, staff, and whānau.
Physical Well-being
Promoting healthy habits, physical activity, and ensuring physical health needs are met (e.g., through the Hauora Centre).
Spiritual Well-being
Cultivating personal values, fostering a sense of belonging, and connecting students to their inner self.
Connection to Land
Fostering environmental awareness and a connection with the land and local environment.
Integrated Well-being and Mentoring
Well-being is not a separate service; it is integrated through our daily curriculum and student support systems:
Ngā Toa o Kerehana: Our academic mentoring programme ensures every student has a committed Kaiako who monitors their Hauora holistically.
Kaimanaaki: Each year group has a Kaimanaaki who oversees pastoral and academic support.
Structured Themes: The Ngā Toa o Kerehana sessions incorporate structured themes focused on Hauora throughout the Trimester.
Restorative Practice: We utilise Restorative Practice Huis to resolve conflicts and support students and the community.
This holistic approach ensures that every Kelston Girls' College student has the comprehensive support required to sustain their well-being throughout their school journey.
To support the holistic well-being of our students, Kelston Girls' College provides comprehensive nutrition programmes ensuring every young woman is fueled and ready to learn throughout the day.
Lunches in Schools Program
Kelston Girls' College is part of the Ka Ora, Ka Ako Healthy School Lunches Programme. Every day, we provide free, nutritious lunches to all students, with menus designed to cater to all dietary requirements.
Breakfast Club
We believe that a successful day starts with a nutritious meal. Our Breakfast Club provides a warm and welcoming environment where students can enjoy a healthy start to their morning alongside their peers, from 8.00 - 8.30am at the school tuck shop.
