Kia Ora, welcome to the Arts & Technlology Curriculum Area!

We offer a range of Visual Arts and Performing Arts programmes to students of all abilities. Kelston Girls' College is well known for catering for the needs of students from many cultures and ethnicities. Here in the Arts Faculty we pride ourselves on developing culturally responsive programmes where students feel they can achieve. Kelston Girls' College is known for the strong Visual Arts department; our Photography, Painting and Art Design programmes are popular with students as they are able to use industry level equipment in our Mac suite and class set of digital cameras. Managing self and thinking are promoted through students developing a portfolio of work around their interests.We have a purpose built Drama studio on site where students can develop their performance skills through group plays, individual pieces and other opportunities such as the Comedy Club. Students take ownership of their learning through devising pieces in groups and individually. Great playwrights such as Sophocles, Shakespeare and Bruce Mason are studied and performed at different levels.

We have a rich history and culture of music at Kelston Girls' College, our students are encouraged to build on natural ability to learn music theory and develop new understandings of music. 

Dance is a popular subject here at Kelston Girls'. In the junior school Dance is part of the Physical Education Faculty, however from Year 11 learn may skills around teamwork, participating and contributing through devising group performances. 

Technology provides technological literacy essential for informed participation in today’s world, it also provides skills useful in a variety of tertiary courses and paves the way to exciting career opportunities. This pathway focuses on the areas of Technology, which are as follows:

Hospitality and Catering

Level 1 – Hospitality Standards institute (HSI) Unit Standard through Service IQ (provider). Level 2 and 3 attend a trades academy course at NZ School of Food and Wine.

The Hospitality course introduces students to the exciting and progressive hospitality and catering industry. It gives students the knowledge and skills they need to prepare and present food in a safe and hygienic environment. Career paths leading from Hospitality include the culinary arts, hospitality management, waitressing, tourism and travel, private catering, cordon bleu and a range of other opportunities.

Food Technology – Years 9 to 10

Year 9 students participate in the compulsory technology programme at Year 9 that includes Basic Food Hygiene and Safety, Measurement and Equipment use as well as the design and development of Healthy Breakfast options. In Year 10, students investigate and promote the importance of a balanced and nutritious diet, design and make burgers for the Secondary Schools Beef and Lamb Competition, they explore the cultural influences of food choices and get involved in the customer service and hospitality side of food service.

Digital Technology is a rapidly growing area. Our students are given the opportunity to develop knowledge and skills in a variety of programs, so that they are better equipped to meet the rapid changes that are occurring in our society. Digital Computing Skills for Year 9 students is compulsory. In addition all Year 9 students have a trimester learning basic programming and photo editing. In Years 10, 11 and 12 it is a full year option. There is the opportunity to complete the National Certificate in Computing at Level 2 and 3.. At Year 13 students are able to take Digital Print Design with Yoobee Design School and gain the Certificate in Digital Media as well as Level 3 Achievement and Unit Standards.

By the end of Year 13, students will have had experience with the use of Microsoft Suite of Programs, Programming software and Adobe Creative Suite. Students complete projects covering skills; Image Manipulation, Digital Print, Illustrations, Programming, Web Design, Animation and 3D Animation.

The use of ICT tools across the curriculum enables students to use skills developed and transfer them to other subject areas and useful as a tool for tertiary student or future employment

With five computer labs and Wi-Fi access for all students, Kelston Girls' College is able to give students the best possible advantage in developing their Information Technology skills.
