Tongan Group

A large Tongan group performed at the Polyfest this year and won the Soke trophy for second place in the Tongan section. The Ma’ulu’ulu is a group dance, in which both boys and girls perform.  The entire group sits down on stage and is accompanied by a band, playing drums.  The person who plays the drums has to entertain the audience and/or the judges. The Soke is performed by girls and boys also, who are on their feet for the entire dance.  The purpose of the dance is to show what the wars of the past were like. The sticks move in time with the beat of the music, with the head and feet inclining as well.
